Quick answer: Mas Domnik 2027, Dominica’s carnival, runs from January 9 to February 10, 2027. The two big days on the road are Carnival Monday and Tuesday, February 8 and 9, in Roseau, and the season ends on Ash Wednesday, February 10.

Why it’s called the Real Mas

Dominica keeps carnival traditions other islands have let go: Sensay masqueraders in layered costumes and horned masks, stilt-walking Bwa Bwa, and J’ouvert led by Lapo Kabwit goat-skin drums before dawn. Bouyon is the soundtrack, and since 2025 carnival has crowned a Bouyon Road March alongside the calypso Road March. The first winner was “RAGS” by Trilla G, Shelly and Skinny Fabulous.

How the season builds

  • Opening parade: queen contestants, calypsonians and costume groups launch the season.
  • Calypso tents: weekly shows where calypsonians battle for a place in the Calypso Monarch final.
  • Queen shows: including the National Queen Show, where Miss Dominica is crowned.
  • Fetes: Panorama by de Bay on the Roseau Bayfront and parties most weekends.

Carnival Monday and Tuesday

Monday starts with J’ouvert at 4am, then traditional and school bands, then T-shirt bands behind hi-fi trucks into the night. On Tuesday the new Carnival King and Queen are presented and the big costume bands take the road. The song played most that day wins the Road March.

Ash Wednesday

Vaval, the spirit of carnival, is buried or burned in places such as Dublanc and the Kalinago Territory, and Lent begins.

Plan ahead
